Summer Travel 2023

There is a FEAST of top level volleyball in Europe this summer….

Watching the best players up close you really get to apprecate the speed, power and skill of the game and luckily for us there are plenty of opportunities in the coming months.

The top senior and junior teams in England will battle it out in Kettering at the end of April. Through May and June the top international teams will be taking part in the Volleyball Nations League (VNL), for many of them it will be a vital step in preparing for next summers Olympics in Paris.

Starting in August and running through into September will be the mens and womens European championships.

GCSE Skillz Camp

GCSE Skillz Camp

Volleyball is now one of the sports that a student can choose for the Physical Education GCSE  course with the practical performance exam element amounting to 10 percent of the overall grade.

The practical can be done remotely with the student’s performance assessed from a video recording. Now, for the first time, students have the opportunity to attend our Skillz camp and also record the practical training and match play element for their GCSE.

Numbers are limited at this camp so that the coaches will have time to give individual attention to each participant, having successfully run the second of these camps over the Easter holidays we will be planning future dates, please contact us if you are interested in this camp.

From Surrey to Georgia Tech

From Surrey to Georgia Tech…

Former Volleyball Development Camps coach Will McDonald is currently working as Technical Coordinator at Georgia Tech Volleyball who have already made a strong start to the NCAA season and are presently sitting amongst the Top 10 teams in the country.

Will initially came to our camps as a player and he quickly showed an aptitude for coaching, working with us initially as a trainer, then Assistant Coach and finally as a Head Coach, along the way establishing our Blue Print for coach development. Outside of VbDC he has coached at Ashcombe, Richmond as well as England Cadet Girls Assistant Coach and former Interim Head Coach for the England Junior Women’s beach volleyball team.

National Finals

VBDC U15 Girls beaten finalists …

The VBDC Under 15 girls team didn’t quite manage to cause an upset in the national final against Richmond, but they certainly got pulses racing and the Richmond coach reaching for the timeout button in a close first set. It was good to see campers featuring for Richmond, Urmstone and of course VBDC over the weekend

The match, and all the other finals are available to stream on the Volleyball England YouTube channel.

Junior Grand Prix 2022

Junior Grand Prix 2022

Launching in January 2022 Volleyball England junior competitions have had a face lift. With the new tiered Grand Prix style series of events, quite a lot has changed since the competitions last ran.

The new-look U15, U16 and U18 series have created a level of play that is ideal for new or inexperienced teams while also creating competitive playing opportunities for the country’s most talented junior athletes.

The VBDC-Club are delighted to be among record 290 teams from volleyball clubs and schools have entered Volleyball England’s refreshed junior competitions and look forward to hosting the first round on 16th January

Volleyball England Junior Grand Prix

One of the unexpected side effects of the Covid pandemic has been a surge in interest for playing volleyball among youngsters, certainly fuelled in part by a certain Japanese cartoon series.

Credit must go to Volleyball England and in particular to their Competitions Commission for first of all recognising the need for a competitive outlet for both the new comers to the sport as well as catering for the existing players and secondly devising a structure that pretty much addressed the needs of both groups.

Over 300 junior teams have signed up  for the Grand Prix series which is split into two tiers and played over 3 rounds in the Under 15, 16 and 18 girls and boys competitions. This structure should see teams playing at least a minimum of 9 matches, with Tier 2 events arranged to keep traveling distances down while also playing against a variety of different teams.

In Tier 1, after the first round of matches teams are split into Gold, Silver and Bronze pools, with movement between these pools also possible after the second round of matches depending on results.

We have been fortunate to have attended (and indeed hosted) several of these events and the feedback has been positive across the board
