Volleyball Scholarships
From time to time, VbDC has had the good fortune to work with exceptional athletes and sometimes these athletes might be able to use their sports talent to help defray the cost of higher education, to play volleyball for a living, or to take a course of study abroad.
In the past VbDC campers of high ability have gone on to attend a volleyball academy, to obtain a bursary for helping run a British university volleyball club, and several have gone on to win substantial scholarships to play at American universities – one of whom earned All American athlete honours. Several campers have played professionally in Europe, and one was selected to train with her nation’s Olympic squad. The financial awards received by athletes we’ve helped totals nearly a half-million dollars.
Scholarship advice and search assistance is currently offered by VbDC on a pro-bono basis, and is not comprehensive. However, we have had contact with a number of fee-based scholarship search agencies over the years. They are not all the same. Some have extensive personal contact with university volleyball programmes and some help athletes prepare a CV or video presentation, while others’ service is limited to sending form letters of enquiry to coaching staffs. The cost of any of these services can be considerable.
VbDC can help a talented athlete who wishes to pursue their scholarship dream with the help of an agency to find the agency that is right for them.
What an athlete searching for a scholarship must first do is examine their own personal needs: things that some agents may not do: Does the athlete have family in the US they want or need to be near? Does the athlete prefer a small college town or big city surroundings? What course of study does the athlete want? Does the athlete prefer a warm or cold climate? Does the athlete need to be close to international travel facilities? As inconsequential as they might seem, such things can be very important to having a successful university career abroad, and that is the type of advice VbDC can provide to an athlete before hundreds or thousands of dollars are spend on an agency contract.
